How to get from Europe
Nearly all international flights fly to and from Astana, although some smaller towns have flights to Russia. There are also two long distance rail routes to Almaty from Urumqi in China and Moscow in Russia. Other overland routes include Ürümqi to Almaty via the border post at Khorgos and Zharkent, and two China-Kazakhstan crossings farther north, at Bakhty (Tacheng on the China side) and Maikapchagai (Jeminay in China). A once-weekly, 18-hour ferry ride leaves from Baku in Azerbaijan to Aktau in Kazakhstan.
